Slavery
The North and South had disagreements over slavery. Generally, the South agreed with the concept of slave labor, and the North wanted to abolish it.

The Emancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1, 1863, ending slavery in most Confederate states, but even after it was issued, many blacks remained on the plantations, willing to fight for the Confederate cause.
