Clara Barton
When Barton was grown up, she taught for many years, and then eventually moved to New Jersey, establishing the state’s first free school, then was denied the chance to run it because of her gender. She later became the nursing “angel” to soldiers in some of the Civil War’s “bloodiest” battles: Second Manassas, Antietam, and Fredericksburg.
